And it’s not the East and West Side,
Neither could do it alone,
It’s the combination of both schools,
Which we owe to Mr. Bone.
— Edith N. Abernethy (1911)
East Batavia (District 101) and West Batavia (District 102) were united in a new school district in April 1911 through the efforts of Superintendent Hugh A. Bone.
The newly unified high school held classes in Center (or West Side) School until the state-of-the-art Batavia High School opened in 1915 on this site. The John Van Nortwick home, immediately south of the high school, served as the “Household Science Building” until its demolition in 1950 to make way for a new gymnasium, completed in 1952.
When a completely new high school opened at 1201 West Main Street in September 1966, the old building then served as Batavia Junior High School until 1992, when Batavia Middle School opened at 1501 Raddant Road, renamed Rotolo Middle School in 2002. The building was demolished in June 1999 to make way for Batavia Public Library, which opened in January 2002.
