The structure on this site was opened for services in September 1880 and was consecrated in July 1881, a gift of John & Patti Mari Van Nortwick in 1879, who also gave the parish its first rectory.
The building was designed by George Collins in the Gothic Revival style and constructed of locally quarried limestone. A new “Parish House” in 1922 for offices, classrooms, and extension activities featured the Checkerboard Room, which hosted community dances and events.
The “Batavia Mission” was established in 1842 when Philander Chase, the first Episcopalian bishop of Illinois, presided over the first such services in Batavia. The mission was organized as “Calvary Parish” in May 1855.
Since May 1983, the Batavia Islamic Center has shared space in the church’s school, a partnership that was recognized by the U.S. Department of State in 2008.
