Historic Batavia Walking Tour
United Methodist Church of Batavia

The structure on this site was dedicated in March 1887, almost entirely the gift of Elijah J. Gammon, the first preacher in 1854, and Captain Don Carlos Newton. Their largesse was inspired by a church they admired in southern France.

The building was designed by Solon Spencer Began in the Romanesque Revival style. The heavily textured exterior was constructed almost entirely of field boulders, mostly taken from the Mill Creek farm of the contractor, Isaac S. Stephens, south of Batavia.

In 1836, a group meeting in William Van Northwick’s home was organized as the “First Methodist Class,” which marked the founding of the Methodist church in Batavia. In July 1983, United Methodist Church of Batavia was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
